Glutathione peroxidase deficiency with increased susceptibility to erythrocyte Heinz body formation.

چکیده
1. The production of Heinz bodies, after incubation of erythrocytes in the presence of hydrogen peroxide vapour, was significantly greater in erythrocytes with abnormally low glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity than in cells with normal enzyme activity. 2. The addition of the catalase inhibitor, sodium azide, to the incubation mixture, increased the formation of Heinz bodies after exposure to hydrogen peroxide vapour ; the percentage of Heinz bodies was significantly greater in erythrocytes with low GSH-Px activity than in normal erythrocytes. 3. Erythrocyte GSH-Px deficiency thus predisposes the cell to Heinz body formation when exposed to oxidant stress.

Heinz body anaemia in lambs with deficiencies of copper or selenium.
1. The progression of Heinz body anaemia was studied in groups of lambs of low- and high-copper status, produced through breeding or Cu supplementation, when they were transferred from improved pasture to rape (Brassica napus L.) in autumn. Some lambs had previously received selenium by injection. The Cu and Se supplements markedly increased superoxide dismutase (EC 1.15.1.1; SOD) and glutathio...
متن کاملAbnormal erythrocyte metabolism in hepatic disease.
Erythrocyte (RBC) metabolic studies were done on 114 patients with severe hepatic disease. Heinz body formation after incubation of RBCs with acetyl phenylhydrazine was found to be significantly higher in patients than in controls. RBC-reduced glutathione levels were lower than those of controls both before and after incubation with acetyl phenylhydrazine, and patients with the highest Heinz bo...
متن کاملThe Role of Nonhemoglobin Proteins and Reduced Glutathione in the Protection of Hemoglobin from Oxidation in Vitro.
A deficiency of reduced glutathione in erythrocytes of freshly shed blood (1-4) or in erythrocytes exposed to certain chemical compounds (5) has been associated with shorter red cell survival and, in most cases, with the accumulation of oxidation products of hemoglobin, including methemoglobin, sulfhemoglobin, and Heinz bodies. Studies of "primaquine-sensitive" hemolytic disease have emphasized...

Background & Aim: The biological effects of potent oxidative agents in human body are under anti-oxidative control. Functional defects of organs may result from reactions of free radicals with the cell membrane. It is known that major targets of oxygen radicals are cell membrane lipids. Some reports indicate the role of peroxides in development of atherosclerosis. Human body tissues(eg.eryt...

Abstract Background and objective: Exposure of red blood cells to oxygen radicals can induce Lipid proxidation, hemoglobin damage and hemolysis of erythrocyte .The present study was designed to determine the alteration of plasma lipid peroxidation and erythrocyte Superoxide Dismutase and Glutathione Peroxidase enzyme activities in stored blood and to find out the quantitative alterations and th...
